Researchers at the University of Tokyo explored the physical and chemical properties of electric energy storage for the first time and found improvementsLithium ion batteryNew method. They have not only successfully improved the voltage transmission capacity of lithium-ion batteries, but also successfully improved the safety of lithium-ion batteries.
currentLithium ion batteryThere are safety problems, which may damage the equipment and cause a fire. Researchers from the Graduate School of engineering and Graduate School of science of the University of Tokyo have proposed a method to improve the safety of lithium-ion batteries.
Professor Toyoda Yamada, a researcher at the University of Tokyo, said: "the voltage of the battery is mainly limited by electrolyte materials. Currently, the electrolyte solvent in lithium-ion batteries still uses the solvent just commercialized in the early 1990s. Therefore, we have found an improved method. Our new fluorinated cyclic phosphate solvent (tfep) electrolyte greatly improves the existing ethyl carbonate (EC)."

Ethyl carbonate is flammable and unstable above 4.3 volts; On the other hand, tris (2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) phosphate is nonflammable and can withstand high voltages up to 4.9 volts. This extra voltage means that the battery can last longer.
"We are proud of this progress, and its effectiveness is a little surprising. This is because the method we proposed tfep is itself very novel. Most of the studies on electrolytes are crossing the river by feeling the stone. Our method comes from the theoretical understanding of the potential molecular structure. Before experimental verification, we predicted the safe high voltage characteristics. So, this is really a surprise."
